Electric vehicle technology: Comparative analysis of EV, DM and DMI chargers

Publish Time: 2025-02-10
Electric vehicles (EV), hybrid vehicles (DM) and super hybrid vehicles (DMI) are the three major technical routes in the current automobile market. They differ in charging methods, technical characteristics, and application scenarios. The following will analyze the comparison of the chargers of the three in depth.

Pure electric vehicles (EV)

EV is a car that is completely powered by electricity, and its power battery needs to be charged through external charging facilities. There are mainly the following ways to charge EV:

1. Home AC charging: Use home power to charge the vehicle through an AC charger, which takes a long time, usually 6-8 hours to fully charge. With the advancement of technology, some new home chargers can charge the battery from 20% to 80% in 3-4 hours.

2. Public charging piles: Charging piles set up in public places such as shopping malls and parking lots can range from 3.6 kW to 50 kW, which can greatly shorten the charging time. For example, a charging pile with a power of 50 kW can charge an electric vehicle to about 80% in 30 minutes.

3. Fast charging stations: provide higher charging power, such as 150 kW or even higher, and can charge electric vehicles to 80% of their capacity in 15-30 minutes. These charging stations are usually located in highway service areas and city centers to facilitate fast charging for owners who drive long distances.

Hybrid Vehicle (DM)

DM vehicles combine the advantages of traditional internal combustion engines and electric motors, and can switch between pure electric mode and hybrid mode. The main charging methods of DM are:

1. Slow charging: Use household power or 220V/380V power to charge the vehicle's battery pack. The charging time is longer, usually 8-10 hours to fully charge.

2. Fast charging: You can use charging facilities higher than household power, such as DC charging piles, to charge the battery, but the fast charging power is lower than that of EVs, and it can usually be charged to 80% of its capacity in 30-45 minutes.

Super Hybrid Vehicle (DMI)

DMI vehicles are dominated by electric motors, and internal combustion engines are mainly used for power generation and auxiliary drive. Its charging method is similar to DM, but it is more technologically advanced, such as BYD's DMI technology, which works by charging the battery through a generator in an efficient speed range and using the battery to provide kinetic energy to the motor when needed. DMI's charging methods include:

1. Home charging: Similar to DM, use home power to charge the vehicle.

2. Public charging: Use DC charging piles at public charging stations to quickly charge the vehicle.

3. Energy recovery: When the vehicle decelerates or brakes, kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and stored in the battery.

From the perspective of charging methods, EV and DMI have similar charging requirements, and both can use home slow charging and public fast charging facilities. Due to the presence of the internal combustion engine, DM does not require external charging facilities when charging, and can charge the battery through the vehicle's own kinetic energy recovery and engine power generation. However, DM has a limited pure electric range, while EV and DMI can provide a longer pure electric range.

When choosing a model, consumers can decide whether to buy DMI or DM based on their driving habits, range requirements, charging convenience, and environmental awareness. If you value the quietness and environmental friendliness of pure electric driving and have the conditions to frequently use fast charging facilities, EV may be more suitable. If you focus on long-distance driving and fuel economy, DM may be a better choice.
